Days of the Week in Spanish

Last reviewed on August 26, 2026.

The days of the week in Spanish are lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado and domingo. Unlike English, they are written in lowercase, they are all masculine, and the Spanish week starts on Monday — not Sunday. This guide gives you the pronunciation of each day, the two little grammar rules that trip up most beginners, and the phrases you actually need to make plans.

Only miércoles and sábado carry a written accent. Five of the seven days end in -es, which is also why their plural forms look identical to their singular ones.

Rule 1: Days Are Always Lowercase

English capitalises Monday; Spanish does not. You write Nos vemos el lunes (See you on Monday), never el Lunes. The only time a day is capitalised is at the start of a sentence or in a fixed name such as Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday) or Viernes Negro (Black Friday).

Rule 2: “On Monday” Uses el, Not a Preposition

There is no Spanish equivalent of the English word “on” in front of a day. You use the article instead:

Saying en lunes is one of the most common beginner mistakes. Compare: Trabajo el sábado (I am working this Saturday) versus Trabajo los sábados (I work on Saturdays).

Plurals: Only Two Days Change

Because lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves and viernes already end in -s, they are invariable — the plural is spelled exactly the same and only the article changes: el lunes → los lunes. Only the weekend days add an ending: el sábado → los sábados, el domingo → los domingos.

The Spanish Week Starts on Monday

Calendars across Spain and Latin America put lunes in the first column and domingo in the last. That matters when someone says el fin de semana (the weekend, literally “the end of the week”) or entre semana (on weekdays). If a Spanish speaker tells you “a mid-week meeting”, they mean miércoles.
