Numbers in Spanish 1 to 100

Spanish numbers from 1 to 100 follow three short rules, and once you know them you can build every number in between without memorising a hundred words. The numbers 1–15 are unique and have to be learned; 16–29 are written as a single fused word (dieciséis, veintitrés); and from 31 upwards you simply join the tens and the units with y — treinta y uno, cuarenta y cinco. Numbers 1 to 15 are unique words. From 16 to 19 Spanish fuses diez y… into one word: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve. Only dieciséis keeps a written accent.
Numbers 21–29: One Word, Not Three
The twenties are also written as single fused words, and three of them carry an accent:

- 26 veintiséis · 27 veintisiete · 28 veintiocho · 29 veintinueve
Writing veinte y dos is a common learner mistake — it is veintidós, one word.

From 31 upwards the pattern is completely regular: tens + y + units, written as three separate words. So 31 is treinta y uno, 47 is cuarenta y siete, 68 is sesenta y ocho, and 99 is noventa y nueve. There are no exceptions in that range.
Cien or ciento? Use cien for exactly 100 and before a noun (cien euros, cien personas). Use ciento when something follows: 101 is ciento uno, 150 is ciento cincuenta. Note that Spanish does not insert y after the hundreds — ciento cincuenta, never ciento y cincuenta.
Why Uno Becomes Un and Una
Uno is the only Spanish number that changes for gender. Standing alone you say uno, but in front of a noun it shortens to un for masculine and becomes una for feminine:
- un libro — one book · una casa — one house
- treinta y un días — thirty-one days · treinta y una semanas — thirty-one weeks
The hundreds also agree in the plural: doscientos euros but doscientas personas.
Using Numbers Every Day

Ages use tener, not ser: tengo treinta años, literally “I have thirty years”. And Spanish speakers usually read phone numbers in pairs rather than digit by digit.
Pronunciation Traps
- cinco, cien, doce — the c before e or i is an s in Latin America and a soft th in most of Spain.
- diez is one syllable: DYEHS, not “dee-ez”.
- nueve and noventa — the Spanish v is close to a soft English b.
- seis rhymes with English “mace”, not “sees”.
